Swoosie Kurtz Describes The 'Anguishing' Experience Of Having An Abortion In Her Youth

Swoosie Kurtz: 'I Had An Abortion'

During a HuffPost Live interview Wednesday, Emmy award-winning actress Swoosie Kurtz described the "anguishing" experience of having an abortion in the 1960s.

When HuffPost Live host Ricky Camilleri asked about the 1996 abortion-focused film "Citizen Ruth," in which Kurtz starred, the conversation turned to women's reproductive rights and why that film held personal significance to her.

"It was very important to me," Kurtz said, "because I had an abortion." Kurtz then turned to the camera and remarked, "gosh, did I just say that?"

"It was very, very difficult for me. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever been through in my life. On all levels. Impossibly difficult."

The two-time Tony Award winner revealed that this is the one thing she never told her mother.

"I just couldn't," she said. "I don't know why. I just couldn't at that point."
