Taylor Swift treated fans to a surprise performance at the Stonewall Inn in New York on Friday night.

The pop star marked Pride month by turning up at the historic landmark, which was the site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBT+ rights.

Taylor performed her hit Shake It Off at the bar and her star turn was captured on camera by fans who then shared the footage on social media:

She was joined on stage on Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who was performing his cabaret the show at the Stonewall Inn that night.

Tweeting about the evening, Jesse called Taylor a “gem”, adding: “I’m so happy I don’t have to keep this secret any longer.”

I’m so happy I don’t have to keep this secret any longer. Look who came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall at the Stonewall Inn. @taylorswift13, you are a gem. Thank you for everything you do for the LGBTQ community. We ❤️ you! 🌈 https://t.co/ICE2b3arxU

Earlier in her career, Taylor was often criticised for her silence on political and social matters but in the past 12 months, she’s used her platform to shine a light on issues concerning the LGBT+ community.

On Friday, she released her latest single You Need To Calm Down, which features lyrics that shut down people who target the community.

″You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace, and control your urges to scream about all the people you hate,” she sings. “Because shade never made anybody less gay.”

In the song’s accompanying lyric video, it’s revealed she’s spelling the word “glad” as “GLAAD”, referring to the LGBTQ+ rights campaign group of the same name (further proof that, in her words, “spelling is fun!”).
