'The Circle' Viewers Have Very Mixed Feelings About Channel 4's New Reality Show

'How are they making this last three weeks?'

Channel 4′s much-hyped new reality show ‘The Circle’ left viewers decidedly divided as it kicked off on Tuesday night.

Presented by Alice Levine and Maya Jama, the show sees eight contestants living in the same apartment block, but they are only able to meet each other via an app and communicate over the internet.

The aim of the game is to be the most popular contestant, and not get “blocked”, with players even allowed to catfish one another in order to win the £50,000 prize.

With ‘Big Brother’ soon departing our screens, Channel 4 was likely hoping to be on to the next big reality show format, but judging by what was being said on Twitter, they’ve got a way to go to convince people of that.

Many struggled to get to grips with what the show was actually about...

#TheCircle has me completely confused 😭😭😭😭 I don’t fucking understand 😂

— HURRICANE BOUJEE (@HurricaneBoujee) September 18, 2018

Am I the only one who doesn’t understand #thecircle

— SassyOrangCreamsicle (@Rio_Devoe) September 18, 2018

Anyone else struggling to see the point in the circle? Hoping it grows on me. #TheCircle

— adventuresofmummyandluca (@Krissieeexx) September 18, 2018

#TheCircle has me seriously confused. How they making this last 3 weeks? pic.twitter.com/KwM6nQiMvK

— Lux (@unionlux) September 18, 2018

But others thought it highlighted important issues the social media age presents...

I think the point and message of this show is that you need to be careful when on the internet as you never who you are actually speaking to. #TheCircle

— Sean Morrissey (@Mozz1987) September 18, 2018

I think people are forgetting the point of #TheCircle. It’s showing us how fake & judgemental social media really is. I’m glad they’ve picked up on this topic, but I don’t see the series lasting. It’s kinda boring... 🤷♂️

— ⭐️Series 11 - 7th Oct⭐️ (@Harry_JB_) September 18, 2018

A gay guy pretending to chat up a girl who is actually a straight guy entirely underlines the point that social media is fake. Building on the great work of Nev and Max. #TheCircle

— Christina (@ChristinaP89) September 18, 2018

As interesting as this is going to be to watch and a real social experiment, it’s certainly going to highlight the extremities people will go to on social media in order to be popular. Highlighting & proving the point that we cannot believe everything we see online! #TheCircle

— Elysia_JW (@PurpleElll) September 18, 2018

I think people are completely missing the point of #TheCircle, it’s bringing awareness to issues with social media and helping people understand how fake it is...

— Lifeofahammer (@Lifeofahammerf1) September 18, 2018

However, many weren’t thrilled at the prospect of just watching people dictate messages for three weeks...

Final thoughts: I’m not too sure what to make of it, but I’ll keep watching. Freddie is hilarious and I respect Dan for being the most genuine. I also second everyone’s comments about the poor staff member having to type all of these messages if it isn’t AI. #TheCircle

— Liam O'Dell (@lifeofathinker) September 18, 2018

Nice idea but in practice watching people dictate messages isn't great tv. I'm predicting this is gonna flop hard #thecircle

— Mr Pink (@Sinbad1971) September 18, 2018

Is this all #TheCircle is?

Just random people who don't meet but instead annoyingly dictate messages out loud and send them to each other... and Channel 4 have decided to put this on for an hour every night for the next 3 weeks!

Really? Really!?!

— Charlotte W (@Charlott3_W) September 18, 2018

Speaking their messages, is going to annoy me...their voices #TheCircle pic.twitter.com/qE3Kn58ulu

— Tarah (@TeeBerry81) September 18, 2018

This really needs to be more than people sat on sofas dictating messages. #thecircle

— Fiona Fairbairn (@IsSheFiona) September 18, 2018

Not sure how I feel about #thecircle yet. Am I just going to be watching them send messages everyday? Also logistically how does it work? Do they have their phones? Do they get to go outside or are they locked in that room? This show needs way more explaining to compete with BB🤔

— Sophie Victoria (@Bryne95) September 18, 2018

Some were concerned that the show promoted catfishing and worried about the implications that could have...

Me reserving judgement about #TheCircle but knowing it’s going to be problematic af pic.twitter.com/mn0N0aSkc1

— WayneDavid81 (@WayneDavid81) September 18, 2018

And a guy is pretending to be his Girlfriend. So this is just catfishing each other all in the same building. I have a feeling this is not going to go well at all #TheCircle pic.twitter.com/VyZ1etxoa4

— Emma #KeepThePoet 🏳️🌈🇮🇪🐢 (@Headyeuphoria) September 19, 2018

Really confused at ‘the circle’. Catfishing is frowned upon but they’re making a full programme kind of promoting it??? Not a fan

— Katie (@Katieoleyx) September 18, 2018

Even with Channel 4's need for a new reality TV format, I never expected them to basically turn a group chat with low-key catfishing into an actual series. #thecircle

Many pointed out it bore more than a resemblance to Charlie Brooker’s ‘Black Mirror’...

#TheCircle is the premise of an episode of #BlackMirror even @charltonbrooker could not envisage

— zoë (@dubietyattack) September 18, 2018

Watching #TheCircle and I'm so confused already. What is this premise? A black mirror catfish crossover?

— Danielle (@daniellewbx1) September 18, 2018

In an era where Facebook, Instagram & Snapchat have such an influence on the youth, #TheCircle is living personification of everything wrong with #socialmedia. #BlackMirror called, they want their premise back.

— Rob Carter (@RobertoCartos) September 18, 2018

#TheCircle reminds me very much of @charltonbrooker episode of #BlackMirror ‘Nosedive’ bringing the social media ratings game to life. Hey World, this me, my best self, my enviable self, my untrue self...#socialmedia #scary #NoStars

— Nic Conlay (@Squirrel22) September 19, 2018

#TheCircle is giving me major Black Mirror vibes.

— 🐺DrunkDingo🐺 (@thedrunkdingo) September 19, 2018

But for some, it gave them a hit of nostalgia for the early years of ‘Big Brother’...

#TheCircle has the potential to be actually interesting in the same way that original #BigBrother was a 'social experiment'.

— Helen Copping (@crazymuseumlady) September 18, 2018

#TheCircle The concept is as brilliant as was Big Brother. I hope they make only one season though

— JackiLB (@Jacqueline_LB) September 18, 2018

I’m enjoying #thecircle ⭕️ it’s like big brother meets tinder meets facebook!! Love love love @MayaJama and @Alicelevine pic.twitter.com/XvlHzZlhEv

— Jess Legg (@Jessyarg89) September 18, 2018

Is anyone watching #thecircle. Looks like a modern day big brother

— Phill Kirby (@kirbs_90) September 18, 2018

#thecircle is a perfect evolution of #BigBrother format for today's world. So voyeuristic on a double-level. Very #blackmirror pic.twitter.com/W7N8QijY0M

— Thom McKiernan ☁️💻 (@thommck) September 18, 2018

For some, the beautiful flats the contestants are living in proved to be too much of distraction...

Thought I would have an initial look but found myself looking/admiring the interior design of the flats #TheCircle 😂🙈

— 🌴☀️Valerie Hill ☀️ (@Portsmouth_gal) September 18, 2018

Can I just get one of these flats on #TheCircle ok thanks

— mels (@melsallada) September 18, 2018

I want to live in one of those flats! Each one so different in style but LOVE all of them #TheCircle

— Iain (@BeaIe_) September 18, 2018

15 mins into #TheCircle and the only thing I’m really enjoying are the home furnishings.

— Ash Percival (@ashpercival) September 18, 2018

While many were also not convinced by the authenticity of the Alexa-style app the contestants use to send their messages...

You know this isn't voice recognition, there's a bloke in one of the empty flats is transcribing everything. I'm done. Enjoy #thecircle tweenies.

— Chris Merriman (@ChrisTheDJ) September 18, 2018

I feel bad for the poor people sat having to type out all their messages pretending it’s some sort of hi-tech Alexa/Siri type thing. If it was there would be SO MANY typos! #TheCircle

— Elliot Gonzalez (@elliot_gonzalez) September 18, 2018

The interns writing the messages for the contestants must constantly be thinking “it’s just a stepping stone, it’s just a stepping stone” over and over #TheCircle

— Matthew (@mattandcoffee) September 18, 2018

Final thoughts: I’m not too sure what to make of it, but I’ll keep watching. Freddie is hilarious and I respect Dan for being the most genuine. I also second everyone’s comments about the poor staff member having to type all of these messages if it isn’t AI. #TheCircle

— Liam O'Dell (@lifeofathinker) September 18, 2018

While the feedback on social media was mixed, the ratings painted a much bleaker picture.

It was revealed only 1 million people tuned in, despite heavy promotion from Channel 4, and the huge lead-in the show had from ‘The Great British Bake Off’ which aired to 5.5 million in the slot before.

‘The Circle’ continues tonight at 10pm on Channel 4.
