This Morning host Ruth Langsford quietly left the studio during Monday’s show after becoming upset about her sister’s death.
Ruth slipped out of a phone-in segment which included a call from one viewer struggling to cope with her mental health.
The presenter became emotional after the call reminded her of her sister Julia, who died in June at the age of 62.
Ruth’s husband and co-host Eamonn Holmes told viewers viewers: “Obviously this has featured in Ruth’s life. She’s upset now and she’s had to leave the studio because of her sister who was a chronic depressive and no matter what help or medication as there it didn’t seem to make much difference.
“There were good times and bad times.”
He later added: “Obviously, these things are very raw for her right now, following the death of her sister.”
Ruth then rejoined her husband at the helm of the ITV daytime show when it returned from a commercial break.
She announced news of her sister’s death in June, writing on Twitter at the time: “My lovely Sis Julia has sadly died after a very long illness. My heart is completely broken. She was the kindest and most gentle soul and I will miss her forever.
“As I am sure you will appreciate I need to take time to grieve with my family. Thank you for your understanding.”
She later took some time away from her TV commitments, as Eamonn continued to front This Morning on Fridays with guest presenters including Rylan Clark-Neal.
Ruth and Eamonn are currently standing in for regular hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield during the school holidays.
