Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie': Character Portraits Released Feature Victor, Sparky & More (PHOTOS)

FIRST LOOK: Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie'

"Frankenweenie" is alive!

Tim Burton is returning to animation with his latest macabre movie, "Frankenweenie." The last time the director embarked on a stop-motion project was 2005's "Corpse Bride," and like that film he's once again bringing the dead to life. "Frankenweenie," a remake of a featurette Burton made in 1984, follows Victor Frankenstein (Charlie Tahan) as he attempts to reanimate his beloved -- yet sadly dead -- dog, Sparky.

The film stars a few of Burton's favorite people, including Winona Ryder ("Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands") as Elsa van Helsing, Victor's somber classmate, and Catherine O'Hara ("The Nightmare Before Christmas") as Susan Frankenstein, Victor's Mom. Shockingly, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are nowhere to be heard in the black and white, stop-motion flick.

If Sparky looks familiar, that's probably because Burton borrowed heavily from his design from the central character of 1993's animated series, "Family Dog."

"Frankenweenie," which stars Ryder, O'Hara, Martin Short and Martin Landau, his theaters Oct. 5. Check out the offical character posters below.
