Netflix has announced that the animated sitcom Tuca And Bertie will not be coming back for a second series – and fans are not happy at all.

The streaming service unveiled Tuca And Berie in May, with Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong voicing the eponymous bird heroines.

Upon its release, the show was met with widespread critical acclaim, with many fans praising the way it dealt with serious issues like sexism and mental health.

However, despite winning over critics and viewers, Netflix has decided not to take the show any further, cancelling it after just one series.

The show’s creator Lisa Hanawalt – who previously worked on Netflix’s hit animated series Bojack Horseman – tweeted on Wednesday night: “Netflix is not ordering a second season of Tuca & Bertie.

“Tuca & Bertie is everything I wanted it to be: beautiful, funny, fresh, loving, horny, weird, experimental, comforting, and deep. The whole team put our hearts and asses into this show, and I’m so proud of it.

“Everyone is still glowing over the reviews and articles and feedback. T&B is critically acclaimed and has repeatedly been called one of the best new shows of the year.”

She added: “None of this makes a difference to an algorithm, but it’s important to me and the way I want to continue making art in this world.”

Cast & crew & writers were flawless. Production ran so smoothly, it felt charmed. My IBS flared terribly and the show was better for it!!

Best of all, I still get daily messages and tweets from viewers who connect personally to the characters and stories. The birdsona & plantsona fan art is SO incredible, are you kidding me! And the show is still being discovered by new fans every day!!

On a more optimistic note, Lisa did point out that she was “hopeful” that she could find a new home for the show so Tuca and Bertie can “continue their adventures”.

Thank you to everyone who loves and supports T&B, and to everyone who was comforted and felt like this show gave you a voice. I’m hopeful we can find a home for Tuca & Bertie to continue their adventures. #TucaandBertie pic.twitter.com/xmrAV7Ooyq

Her announcement was met with a wave of disappointment from the show’s loyal fans, who had been hoping that it would at least get one more series…

Tuca & Bertie’s cancellation legit irks me off because there’s absolutely no justification for it. The show was loved and praised by so many and deserved more seasons but no, Netflix decides to waste more money on Friends and other old properties people can buy the boxsets for.

Heartbroken to hear about @Netflix not renewing Tuca & Bertie.... Gonna be honest, kinda a smack in the face for female driven narratives, let alone female driven narratives in the adult cartoon space. T & B was a trailblazing series and will def be a cult classic.

I LOVE TUCA & BERTIE. i thought it was gonna be daft/sweet/uplifting and it was!! but it was also dark and some parts came from a very painful yet necessary place. im a lil heartbroken https://t.co/ZJiE5gIfex

SAVE TUCA & BERTIE!!!! IT IS SO BRILLIANT AND FUNNY AND SWEET AND NECESSARY. THIS NEWS IS ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING. I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN TO SUCH A BREAKOUT BRILLIANT SHOW https://t.co/BEtPtuTr9d

Tuca & Bertie is the best thing on Netflix and it’s such a waste for them not to throw all the money they’ve got at Lisa Hanawalt! https://t.co/8jAsZgizct

Tuca & Bertie is the first adult animated show that has ever really resonated for me. I see so much of myself & my friends in the characters & have never had a show make me so frequently cry so hard I'm laughing & laugh so hard I'm crying. I'm heartbroken it's not getting renewed

I'm so sad. Tuca & Bertie is awesome. I advised many of my friends to see it and many of them have loved it.
I just hope there will still be a chance.

tuca & bertie was everything i ever wanted for women rep it was a show you could watch and laugh along with without worrying that a joke would be made at your expense it was a show that displayed the relationships women have with each other in a realistic light and it meant a lot

— fee (@mineralyoongi) July 25, 2019

i’m genuinely so upset i rewatched the series three times and awaited the new season announcement at the edge of my seat but to see this now is so incredibly disheartening

— fee (@mineralyoongi) July 25, 2019

Wow, First time I've been pissed at a streaming service for doing the exact same thing network television does. Thought you were better than that @netflix...https://t.co/4KPV0J9sCf

Still miffed about @netflix cancelling “Tuca & Bertie”.

We need good adult animation that caters to women.
We need good adult animation that is vibrant, wacky and fun (instead of the same old, ugly, cookie-cutter crap).

This was such a good show on all accounts.
Idiots!

The cancelling of Tuca & Bertie really shows how many men can not relate to women because of toxic masculinity. I know of so many men that didn’t watch this brilliant cartoon but watch shows like BoJack and more.

— PixelJupiter (@PixelJupiter) July 25, 2019

If men were allowed to relate to women — we wouldn’t lose so many great stories and voices.

— PixelJupiter (@PixelJupiter) July 25, 2019

I was really looking forward to a second season of Tuca & Bertie! Such a shame to hear that it isn’t ): It added so much to the adult cartoon world because of the show’s honest perspective of the world through the lens of a woman and what women go through. #RenewTucaandBertie

— tea💫 (@teandstars) July 25, 2019

The toughest part to hear is how so many women connected with the moving themes in the show because it spoke to them in a way many other shows often don’t because of its unique perspective, only for it to be canceled.

There was a similar backlash when Netflix decided not to pursue their revival of family sitcom One Day At A Time earlier this year.

In what could come as a glimmer of hope to Tuca And Bertie fans, One Day At A Time was eventually picked up by another US network, with a fourth series set to air on CBS’ Pop channel next year.
