Severe gales and strong winds of up to 70mph are predicted to cause chaos across the south of the country on Wednesday night and continue for most of the week.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for all of Wales, which will be in place across most of England for Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The warning extends to most of the country for Friday and Saturday, with heavy rains and winds predicted to get more intense.

This could cause delays to rail, air and ferry transport and bridge restrictions could be enforced, forecasters warned.

They also issued flood alerts for Cambridgeshire, Twyford, Bristol and Avon, the River Thames and Chalgrove Brook, south east Somerset, and the upper River Tamar.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “A period of very strong and gusty winds is likely on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

“Strongest winds will be across south west England and south and west Wales late evening, with gusts of 60 to 70mph on coasts and 50 to 60mph inland.”

They are also predicting wintery conditions in the north east with temperatures plummeting back to lows we saw last week from Wednesday night, with some snow expected.

The worst of the weather should subside by Sunday – just in time to go back to work.
