Brown Brothers, Tarrango 2014
The Tarrango grape is probably unfamiliar, a cross between Portugal's noble Touriga Nacional and the humble Sultana grape, grown in Victoria, in Australia's New South Wales, and bottled by Brown Brothers. What's the wine? Arguably a deeply coloured rosé (or is a very light red?) but the deep garnet colour leads on to aromas of spices and coffee, cherry and plummy fruit, and something a little bit briary and Pinot Noir-like. In the mouth it is not heavy with only 12.5% alcohol, but it has a creamy texture and whilst there is dry red fruit, it is that coffee and spice and an earthiness that gives this a bit of seriousness and savouriness. The costs £7.00 in Sainsbury's, but is also in many independent wine merchants at around £7.25 - £8.50 per bottle. See all stockists on wine-searcher.com.
