Women React To Serena Williams Sexism Row: 'This Happens To Black Women In The Workplace Every Day'

The tennis star was docked points after arguing with an umpire at the US Open final.

When Serena Williams was fined £13,100 for effectively losing her temper at the US Open final, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and Billie Jean King both expressed outrage and backed claims she’d been on the receiving end of sexism, claiming male players aren’t held to the same standards.

On Twitter however, women said they were sadly unsurprised by what went down arguing that this debate is about so much more than tennis, but how women, especially black women, are treated in day-to-day life.

In a tweet that’s been liked more than 6,000 times, author Charlene Carruthers said: “What happened to Serena happens to black women in the workplace every day.

“Serena was at work. Tennis is her profession. She’s in a profession that doesn’t fully honour or respect her the way she should be. She’s in the ranks of so many black women.”

For those who missed the match, Williams was given a coaching violation after her coach gave a hand signal, then docked a point when she smashed her racket following an argument with umpire Carlos Ramos over the incident. The row escalated and she was given a third violation for her conduct, which resulted in a game penalty. Many including the WTA have pointed out male players have not been punished in the same way in the past, saying “there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men versus women”.

Carruthers pointed out that Williams is at the very top of her field, highlighting that millions of eyes witnessed the incident, but other women will not have this exposure.

“What about the women who have no wealth, no visibility and no platform? It happens everyday and there is little to no defense,” she said.

Others on Twitter agreed the incident was reflective of how women are treated in wider society.

I completely understand what Serena is going through right now. I am owed an apology ill never receive from unfairness in the workplace. It’s a tax I pay for being black and a woman.

Yet I persist no matter what #SerenaWillams

There’s empirical research about how women are punished for “aggressive” behavior in the workplace. The same behavior is praised and rewarded in men. And this is Serena’s workplace. An almost universal experience for women.

I'm not even a tennis fan, but it's hard to miss all the tweets about Serena and #USopen . This is the experience of every woman in the workplace. We are always expected to conform to a very narrow range of behaviors while men get to be whole human beings at work w/out penalty.

(2/2) When a woman is emotional, she’s “hysterical” and she’s penalized for it. When a man does the same, he’s “outspoken” & and there are no repercussions. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard. More voices are needed to do the same.

— Billie Jean King (@BillieJeanKing) September 9, 2018

Many people saying Serena Williams was justly punished. No. She was punished more harshly than a man, as male tennis players have admitted. There is unconscious bias at work here - some expect "better" behaviour from women & that's #EverydaySexism.

Beyoncé is “misbehaving”
Cardi B is “misbehaving”
Tiffani Haddish is “misbehaving”
Leslie Jones is “misbehaving”
Serena Williams is “misbehaving”

Black women are ALWAYS “misbehaving” when white society defines “good behavior”

the punishment didn’t fit the crime. if everyone else gets a ticket for running a red, and only the black lady gets put in jail for that infraction, then it’s not fair. yeah, the whole thing wasn’t fair to her competitor too, but that doesn’t invalidate Ms. Williams’ point.

But some on Twitter think Williams was punished in accordance to the rules and said the debate isn’t about sexism or racism.

I totally agree with Serena discrimination assertions; as it is blatant and unacceptable; but that was the wrong time and place; she must get the rules/implementation changed or obey them. If she was winning would she have behaved that way? https://t.co/2CIaeLATba

Not everything is racist or sexist okay, Osaka had blonde hair on the night and there depicting Serena Williams as a baby for immediately calling the umpire a cheat, she must think that because she is one of the best female tennis players she’s entitled to win anything.

I'm a big fan of yours Susanna but I can't agree with you. Serena Williams *was* justly punished according to rules. The umpire was correct. Three violations. The fault lies with other umpires who don't enforce the rules correctly when umpiring men OR women. Blame them.

The WTA coming out and backing Serena Williams is nothing short of disgusting. She broke rules 3 times. She got punished 3 times. Simple. The umpire deserves an apology and backing. Anyone that says different is basically saying it’s ok to break rules
