The world’s spiciest tortilla chip is now on sale and it’s so hot, each chip comes in an individually wrapped packet.

The aptly named Carolina Reaper chip is being sold by America-based brand Paqui Chips.

Each individual tortilla chip comes in it’s own packet and a coffin-shaped box.

It’s spiced with Carolina Reaper chilli pepper, which is currently the Guinness Book of World Records holder for being the hottest chilli pepper on Earth.

According to the analysts at the Guinness Book of World Records, Carolina Reaper chilli hits 1.56 million on the Scoville Unit heat scale.

“The Scoville Unit is a method of quantifying a substance’s ‘spiciness’, through determining the concentration of the chemical compounds responsible for the sensation, which are named capsaicinoids,” it explains.

In comparison to Carolina Reaper chilli, jalapeño peppers reach between 2,500 and 5,000 on the scale, while cayenne comes in between 30,000 and 50,000.

Paqui Chips

Jeff Day, brand manager for Paqui Chips, said the company decided to create the super hot crisp to “push the limits”.

“It’s the hottest chip you’ll ever have, I can guarantee you that,” he told Mashable.

“After you eat that one chip, trust me, you’re not looking to dig back into the bag and have a second one. So, one chip is what we created to have the experience.”

In light of the release, Dr Helen Webberley, the dedicated GP for Oxford Online Pharmacy, explained the potential health implications of eating very spicy food.

“Chillies contain a compound called capsaicin, which causes the familiar burning sensation, along with other chemicals that stimulate the nerve fibres,” she told The Huffington Post UK.

“However, these cause no real harm to the nerves themselves. Eating very hot chillies can cause diarrhoea as the gut works to expel them from the body as quickly as possible.

“Very hot foods can make people sweat which in extreme cases can cause dizziness and fainting - but this is very much worst case scenario.”

The insanely hot tortilla chip will be available to buy on the Paqui Chips website from the end of September for those in the US. Dare devils in the UK who wish to try the chip are advised to email the company, as international shipping costs and availability vary.
