You Should Argue More

So whilst it might occasionally infuriate me, I couldn't ask to be part of a better team. One of the good things we can do between us is know when to call it a day, kick back and relax. Or at least we think we do. The Sagres have just been cracked open and it's never seemed like a better time to make the statement that cats are just so much better than dogs.

I hate arguing.

We're on the plane heading for Rio de Janeiro as we journey around the world in 14 days. Having just done the tally, we've had nine arguments in the last twenty four hours.

It's a team of three strong characters. In many ways, we're completely different people with odd interests and little in common. We are all however united by a love for music but more often than not, we can't even agree on that.

We're in each others company for an intense two weeks so there's always going to be moments that bubble over. However, I think it's safe to say we wouldn't want it any other way. Dispute gets the best out of people; it's boring to always agree and I like surrounding myself with people who bring a different perspective to the table. I think it's safe to say I've got more than I bargained for on that front.

All three of us are great mates but for this adventure we're in work mode. We're all driven to succeed and naturally we've all got different beliefs about how we're going to make that happen. The energy levels are high and if you open your mouth you've got to be prepared for the onslaught that could follow at any given moment. Whilst that might sound dysfunctional, it is actually exceptionally functional and it just seems to work. We're so comfortable in the company of each other that we know we're constantly striving to think differently and adapt to alternative ways of approaching any task at hand.

In life you've got to surround yourself with the right people. Sometimes that comes in the shape of people who think similarly to the way we do and people who share similar interests. It is however, always good to have a dynamic that is contrary to all of that and that shakes things up a bit. When we work in teams we're expected to streamline our behaviour to approach the task at hand in a uniform manner. Often this is because if we didn't, we wouldn't get the job done. Imagine if the England Rugby team approached their next Six Nations fixture with fifteen different ideas about how to best win the game. It just wouldn't work. But that's why we love working creatively and especially within the arts because there is no right answer and there is no definitive product. If there was, we'd end up replicating the same ideas time after time and where's the fun in that?

So whilst it might occasionally infuriate me, I couldn't ask to be part of a better team. One of the good things we can do between us is know when to call it a day, kick back and relax. Happy arguing people. It'll keep you healthy in the long run.
