The Indian Government announced it is revoking most of Article 370 from it’s constitution, which includes protections for the hotly-contested Jammu and Kashmir state. As the only Muslim-majority state in India, the regions special status became a lightening rod for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. Pakistan has condemned the action as international organisations like the UN call for calm as Indian-administered side of Kashmir has seen a large military presence move into the region and a media black-out.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party are set to win by a large margin, five years after he was first elected.
