The prime minister Boris Johnson is back to give the latest coronavirus update after recovering from the disease and his partner Carrie Symonds announcing the birth of a baby boy yesterday. It also comes with government under pressure to hit its target of testing 100,000 people per day by the end of April.
Boris Johnson capped off an eventful April as prime minister with the birth of his son with partner Carrie Symonds, two days after returning from three weeks off with severe coronavirus. Has the last month changed the prime minister’s outlook on the crisis? Top of his to do list is when and how to end the lockdown so the country can begin to get back to some semblance of normality, with Johnson’s deputy Dominic Raab was cautious not to discuss while he held the reins of government. Joining Arj Singh, Paul Waugh and Rachel Wearmouth, new Conservative MP for Rother Valley Alexander Stafford gives an insight into the government’s Covid-19 strategy, as well as whether he thinks Sir Keir Starmer can reclaim red wall seats like his for Labour.
Foreign secretary Dominic Raab leads the daily press conference in Boris Johnson’s absence. It comes after the prime minister’s partner Carrie Symonds gave birth to a baby boy earlier today.
Partner Carrie Symonds has given birth to a "healthy baby boy" but PM will remain in Downing Street until "later in the year".
Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds have announced the birth of a “healthy baby boy” at a London hospital via the couple’s spokesperson who also said “both mother and baby are doing very well”. Johnson had only recently returned to take charge of the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis after contracting Covid-19 himself. He had been due to face new Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer at PMQs for the first time but foreign secretary Dominic Raab will now stand in. Johnson, 55, and Ms Symonds, 32, announced in March that they were expecting a baby in “early summer”, and that they had become engaged at the end of last year. The PM has previously suggested he intends to take paternity leave, although it is not known if this remains the case given the coronavirus pandemic.
Both mother and baby are doing very well, their spokesperson said.
