Hundreds of dehydrated baby flamingo chicks have been airlifted from their drought-stricken home in the Northern Cape to a bird sanctuary in Cape Town. The drought in South Africa has led to dams drying up, endangering the habitat of the birds. Volunteers fed the starved chicks upon arrival with a mix of baby cereal, eggs and the prawns that give them their famous colour.

Hundreds of thousands of fish have died on a stretch of a major Australian river in New South Wales, in the third mass incident in recent weeks. The suspected cause is hot weather leading to an algal bloom that has starved the water of oxygen.

Green party MP, Caroline Lucas, is urging the government to rethink the level in which the UK eat meat. The average amount of meat eaten per person in the UK is almost double the world average. If you convert it into an average daily consumption, it comes out at 226g of meat per day for the UK. Research, published in the journal Nature, describes the food system as 'a major driver of climate change', and analyses different options of reducing its impact - including shifting towards a more plant-based diet, flexitarian diet.
