coral reef
Scientists have revealed that the Pacific reefs are in critical danger as the region enters its hottest months of the year. Four years ago a heatwave killed up to half of Hawaii's corals, now early signs of coral bleaching have reached the island's most remote shorelines, a sign that another catastrophic event could be on its way.
'Significant global action to address climate change is critical to slowing the deterioration of the reef's ecosystem.'
A report has found that the condition of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has deteriorated since its last evaluation by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in 2014. The causes cited for this include climate change, overfishing and coral bleaching events. Experts believe its condition can be improved if strong local and global actions are taken. The reef’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage listing is at risk considering this outlook.
There are concerns however the robots could be eaten by turtles.
And it's only going to get worse as the planet gets warmer.
Scientists say global warming sparked the bleaching of coral reefs, killing a significant amount of the planet's shallow-water corals. Now marine researchers are using artificial intelligence to assess the health of coral reefs off Indonesia.
This is first time Australia's Marine Park Authority is allowing any interference in the natural process, but they've been persuaded by the amount of damage sustained by climate change and pollution.
Much of the bleached coral has "zero prospect" of ever recovering.
'What we are seeing is lots and lots of dead coral.'
