Extinction Rebellion
Protesters chanted "we are peaceful, what about you?" as officers arrived.
Over 120 activists have been arrested following protests by environmental group Extinction Rebellion. Activists blocked major London roads, including on Waterloo Bridge, Oxford Circus and Marble Arch. The group, which in early April held a naked protest in parliament, is demanding that the government declare a climate emergency.
"You would have to be pretty stupid not to realise it is a just cause."
The climate change protest group Extinction Rebellion started an international protest in London, blocking central areas such as Marble Arch, Oxford Circus and Waterloo bridge. The group is demanding that the government declare an ecological and climate emergency and take action to end climate change. At least three men were arrested for defacing the exterior of the oil company Shell’s offices.
Graffiti on the building read “Shell kills” and “Lies, lies, lies”.
The protests could continue for weeks.
