Parliament was officially suspended, or prorogued, in the early hours of Tuesday as opposition MPs held up signs reading "Silenced". Some tried to prevent Speaker of the House John Bercow from leaving his chair, which makes the prorogation official. Following the scuffles, shouts of "Shame on you" filled the House as Conservative MPs escorted Bercow to the House of Lords.
