On 14 August 2018, a motorway bridge in Genoa connecting Italy to southern France collapsed, sending vehicles plummeting 50 metres to the ground and killing 43 people. Italy's motorway operator Autostrade was responsible for the maintenance of the 51-year-old bridge and was ultimately blamed by the government for the disaster. Italy's biggest builder Salini Impregilo and shipbuilder Fincantieri have been awarded the contract for the reconstruction of the bridge, which has been designed by Genoa-born Renzo Piano.

At least 18 people were injured when hailstones as big as oranges battered the coast.

Six seconds of controlled explosions wiped out the remains of the Morandi bridge in the northern Italian city of Genoa on 28 June. The demolition paves the way for the building of a new structure, after the dramatic collapse that killed 43 people in August 2018. Engineers used some 550 kilograms of explosive to tear down two towers of the bridge, as cannons shot water over the 40000 tons of steel and concrete to prevent huge clouds of dust engulfing the city.
