While scientists have known about black holes for decades, they’ve never actually been able to see one. As a black hole’s massive gravitational pull sucks everything, including light, towards it, scientists can only infer that they are present when mass is being sucked in a particular direction. The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration team used telescopes from all over the world to capture the image.
"It’s a visionary project to take the first photograph of a black hole," one scientist said.
Astronaut Anne McClain is being replaced by male colleague Nick Hague, NASA said.
